Indifference or detachment towards others
Another attempt of the unconscious self to protect mental integrity is by cutting off emotions, which results in emotional numbing symptoms. It is a part of the avoidance symptoms in posttraumatic stress disorders, which includes indifference or no interest in other people, feeling distant and apathetic towards them, and loss of interest towards activities or hobbies previously enjoyed by the patient. It is an attempt to avoid their own emotions and the triggers associated with traumatic thoughts and memories. They may become unable to love and experience happiness, which significantly impairs their romantic relationships and their social interactions with friends and family.
