Compression of the spinal cord
The spinal cord requires strength and flexibility of the bony structures and the joints to function correctly. In multiple myeloma, these structures are compromised, and the resulting compression causes numerous symptoms in the lower extremities, such as numbness, weakness, and tingling. This is also another cause of back pain, often located at the lumbar spine. However, spinal compression may occur at more than one site and sometimes warrants physicians’ careful investigation.
